The SBD-4 (Scout Bomber Douglas) is a two place, (Pilot and Radioman/Gunner) single engine carrier based aircraft designed to carry two or three bombs and twin .50 cal. machine guns operated as rearward defense by the Radio Operator/Gunner. SBD's turned the tide of the war in the Pacific at the Battle of Midway, June 4-6, 1942 by sinking four Japanese Aircraft Carriers in the span of several minutes.
The museum's SBD-4 Dauntless 10508 was based on the Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga CV-3 during the war. This aircraft crash landed on the Solomon Islands in 1944 and was recovered in 1993 by individuals and eventually found it's way to the U.S. The museum acquired this aircraft in 2013.
